Strategic Placement
The mens bathroom in the TSRB on the floor which I work has the light switch placed in such a way that I compulsively turn it off when I leave. I don't know if this is purposeful, but it makes for an embarrassing yelped "Sorry!" whenever I remember that someone else was in the bathroom on my way out. See diagram for a clearer view.

Image haxxed with The Gimp. Linux doesn't have MSPaint =(.
This is one place where proximity and placement is quite possibly a bad thing since it's a natural movement for me to turn off the lights when leaving the bathroom. Don Norman would be proud--or maybe he would curse them. It's hard to tell.

And what exactly is wrong with The Gimp? It’s a nice program that doesn’t cost a dime. It’s no Fireworks or Photoshop, but it’s not half bad either. And don’t feel bad, at Ingles, the bathroom door/light switch setup is exactly like that too, and I’ve turned off the lights a couple times, and nearly done it and caught myself a dozen or more times. lol

I like The Gimp because it’s free, but try and draw a box or a circle with it. The steps are absolutely retarded and completely obscure. Since I have been working for the HCI people I have been ingrained with Don Norman’s concepts of Affordances, and having no hidden/weird functionality. Using the selection tool to select an area then applying a stroke to that is not a good idea.

lol. I have done that a couple of times too. I think I’ve even found myself locking someone else’s door while I was on my way out. that was kinda wierd.
